Read the following carefully to understand the obligations of this important role. If are interested in joining NJACT as a Perry Award reviewer, please download, complete and submit the NJACT Reviewer Application.
Please note that all experienced theater veterans are encouraged to apply. However, NJACT reserves the right to decline any application if it feels the candidate does not demonstrate a sufficient breadth and depth of theater experience.
Reviewer Requirements
To maintain their NJACT membership, reviewers must meet the following requirements:
- Reviewers must fulfill all requirements, follow all rules and execute all processes outlined in the most recent edition of the NJACT Perry Award Review Process Manual.
- Reviewers must have Internet access and an active email account as they will be assigned a username and password to access the NJACT online reviewer scheduling tool found on the NJACT website.
- Reviewers must review a minimum of 4 shows per season, but are encouraged to review as many shows as possible. Reviewers who join NJACT and complete their training after the start of a season are encouraged to review as many shows as possible, but are required to review a minimum of one show every three months for the remainder of the season.
- Reviewers submit their reviews online through the NJACT website immediately following the show they review. All reviews must be submitted within two weeks of the performance date.
Reviewer Selection and Training Process
The following outlines the process by which NJACT Perry Award reviewers are selected and trained.
- Reviewer training sessions are held several times each year at the discretion of the NJACT board of directors.
- The NJACT board of directors includes Reviewer Liaisons for the Northern and Southern regions of the state. These Reviewer Liaisons are responsible for the reviewer selection and training for their region.
- The Reviewer Liaisons are responsible for finding a member theater in their region to host their training sessions. Once a location, date and time has been set up with a theater, the Liaison works with the NJACT Marketing Director to promote the training session and solicit applications from candidates.
- Prospective candidates are required to complete a reviewer application and submit their application together with an up-to-date theater resume.
- The Reviewer Liaisons are responsible for approving or rejecting reviewer candidates based on the breadth and depth of their theater experience.
- Once approved by the Reviewer Liaison, the candidate is formally invited to the reviewer training session scheduled for the candidate’s region.
- Training sessions are run by the Reviewer Liaisons and/or other members of the NJACT board of directors. During the sessions, which run approximately 1 to 2 hours, the candidates are provided with documentation on the rules, processes, and scoring criteria for reviewing shows. The trainer discusses all these things and answers questions.
- Once the candidates have completed the training session, they are set up in the NJACT online reviewer scheduling system and provided with a username and password that allows them to access to the scheduling system on the NJACT website. Once this is completed, reviewers may schedule their review appointments online.
