NJACT GOES DIGITAL

New Jersey’s Premiere Community Theater Awards Program Launches
New Website and Adopts Social Media to Connect with Members

Linden, NJ (June 30, 2009) – NJACT, the New Jersey Association of Community Theaters, is going digital by launching a new website (www.njact.org) and adopting social media technologies like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in time for the opening of its 2009-2010 season. The volunteer-based arts organization took on these new Internet projects as one of the ways the groups is pursuing its goal of being more responsive to, and developing a stronger partnership with, the theater community.

"Our membership is growing and we needed to find a way to grow with it," said NJACT President Amy Levine. “That means finding better, more efficient ways to communicate and collaborate with the New Jersey Theater Community. We think the new site, and the use of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube will help us do that.”

The organization’s new policy of increased communication and collaboration has manifested itself in other ways as well. In April of this year, NJACT formed a Review Process Committee made up of Perry Award reviewers and representatives from leading theater companies across the state. Based on input from the committee, the NJACT board developed a series of policy changes designed to help improve the Perry Award Review Process.

"The new season is bringing a lot of changes that we’re excited about," Levine said. “But that also means we need to do a lot of communicating to help the theater community, and our membership in particular, be prepared and embrace those changes. We think the new website and these new online tools are going to help us do that.”

One of the first tests of the group’s new technology will be its upcoming Perry Awards nominations meeting scheduled on August 1 at 2 pm at the Chatham Playhouse in Chatham, NJ. The group uses this annual event to publicly announce the Perry Award nominees. This is a much anticipated event in New Jersey Community Theater and it has always been difficult for the group to get the word out and increase attendance. They are counting on their new communication tools to help. The meeting is open to the public. Admission is $5 and includes refreshments.

NJACT is a volunteer organization dedicated to celebrate outstanding achievements by artists of all disciplines involved in the performance and production of New Jersey Community Theater. This is accomplished through the NJACT Perry Awards, New Jersey's premiere community theater awards program. This year’s Perry Awards Gala will be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Somerset, NJ on September 20, 2009.
