NJACT appreciates every theater's participation in the Perry Awards process. We feel it is our obligation to provide the most thorough and objective review possible. Here are a few simple suggestions for things member theaters can do to help us accomplish this on behalf of their cast and crew. If you are a reviewer or a theater rep who has a tip you'd like to pass along to other member theaters, please share it in the new NJACT Theater Forums.

  • Always Include Your Theater’s Address and Phone Number When Posting a Show
We know it sounds obvious, but it has to be said. When you post your shows on the NJACT website, make sure you include the street address and phone number of the theater, as well as the address for your company's website. Also, it would be helpful if you posted travel directions to your theater on your company website. This is a tremendous help not only to reviewers, but to your patrons.

  • Complete the NJACT Technical Sheet
We recommend you complete the NJACT Technical Sheet and leave it at the box office with the reviewer's tickets. This document will allow you to pass detailed information about your cast and crew to the reviewer. You can also provide your suggestions for which award categories your actors should be considered for - Lead, Supporting or Featured.

  • Clearly Identify Youth Performers
Use the NJACT Technical Sheet to flag which performers in the cast are under the age of 18. This may seem obvious to you, but it may not be obvious to the reviewer.

  • List your Set Designer and Set Dresser in the Program
Make sure you credit your set designer in the program, as well as the person/people who were responsible for the set dressing, as these folks also get credit under Set Design. If using the NJACT Technical Sheet, be sure these people are listed together under "Your Candidate(s) for Scenic Design."

  • Indicate Rentals as well as Support Personnel
Please indicate in your program or in the NJACT Technical Sheet instances where sets and costumes are rented. In cases of costume rentals, please indicate if you had a costume designer or coordinator. This will help us ensure that proper credit is given to the proper person.

  • Assign a “Go-To” Person
It is a good idea to assign a ”go-to” person who can answer any questions that a reviewer may have. Many reviewers have given feedback that when they go to the box office to ask questions, the staff has no idea how to answer their questions and are not sure who to direct them to. We recommend that your go-to person be listed on the NJACT Technical Sheet supplied to the reviewer so they know who to ask for when they have a question.

  • Know When the Reviewers are Coming and Be Prepared
Make sure that you know when the reviewers are coming and that there are two tickets reserved for them. Keep in mind some reviewers travel from quite a distance to come and review your show, and there is nothing more embarrassing and uncomfortable as when a reviewer shows up and the theater doesn’t have tickets for them, especially if the show is sold out.

  • What Do I Do if a Reviewer Doesn’t Show Up?
If for some reason a scheduled reviewer does not show up, please notify NJACT as soon as possible. If you are a North Jersey theater, send an email to the North Jersey Liaison, and if you are located in South Jersey, send an email to the South Jersey Liaison.

  • Communicate Clearly When an Understudy is Going on for a Cast Member
If an actor cannot go on, and they are replaced with an understudy, please let the NJACT reviewer know whether that person is a prepared understudy (part memorized and costumed) or an unprepared understudy (script in hand). The prepared understudy will be reviewed without prejudice or favor and the unprepared understudy will not be reviewed. But the reviewer needs to be notified so reviewer can proceed appropriately and the name of the prepared understudy can be correctly recorded.

  • Make it Clear if a Member of the Cast is an Equity Actor
NJACT policy states that equity actors are not eligible for Perry Award consideration. We recognize that some theater companies use an equity actor from time to time, but do not wish to announce that fact publicly. In such cases, we request that you use the NJACT Technical Sheet to inform the reviewer when an equity actor is performing in the show. This will help us avoid misunderstandings later.
